Self, Society and Social Media

With over 2.2 billion users on Facebook, and 1.5 billion who use the site on a daily basis, social media has become one of the defining technologies of our time. But the rapid pace of technological development has left researchers behind - there is currently no strong evidence to draw conclusions about the effects that social media is having upon us. Some studies suggest that social media can have a positive impact by allowing people to connect with distant friends and family, and by allowing marginalized people to form groups and find support. But other studies suggest that using websites like Facebook reduce face time with friends and family, and can lead to self-image problems and "Facebook envy". How can social media be used or changed to have a more positive impact? What should astute users know in order to get the benefits of social media without risking harm?
